Top 10 Medicinal Indian Flowers Used In Ayurveda

Ayurveda have been using flowering plants for herbal medicine to treat list of diseases, Here is the list of Indian flowers used in herbalism. More well known flowers found in India used in Ayurveda are Kachnar flower, Rose, Mogra, Saffron, Marigold, Sunflower, Kantakari wild flowers, Woodfordia fruticosa, Solanum virginianum and Satyanashi flower.

Indian Lotus/Nelumbo nucifera

Sacred Indian lotus flower is cultivated for its edible seeds and rhizome as a vegetable in Asian countries. The leaves, rhizome and seeds have been used in Ayurveda for diarrhea, cholera and fever.

Brahma Kamal/Saussurea obvallata

Brahma Kamal is the state flower of Uttarakhand and has many medicinal properties. The flowers are native to the Indian Himalayas at an altitude of around 4500 m and also considered a medicinal herb in Tibetan medicine.

Palash/Butea monosperma

Palash also known as flame of the forest bloom during the early summer in most of the parts of the Indian Subcontinent. The flowers of Palash are used to prepare color for Holi festival and the bark to treat external wounds, diarrhea and urinary disorders.


Kewra is actually not a flower but an extract distilled from the flower Screwpine tree or Pandanus and used in traditional Indian perfumery. The oil extracted from male kewra flowers are used in Ayurveda to treat arthritis.

Gudhal/Hibiscus rosa sinensis

There are red, orange pink, yellow and white varieties of Hibiscus flowers available in India, leaves and flowers are extensively used in Ayurveda to lower blood pressure and hibiscus tea made from dried flowers is one of the most popular drink, consumed both hot and cold.

Aparajita/Clitoria ternatea

The butterfly pea is flowering vine and native to tropical India and used In traditional Ayurveda for enhancing memory and sedative properties. The blue flower is used as a natural food colouring and also for flower tea mixed with honey and lemon.

Ashoka/Saraca asoca

Ashoka tree is one of the most important tree of the Indian subcontinent, considered sacred and valued for its flowers. Ashoka flowers, leaves and bark are used in abdominal pain, heart and uterine disorders.

Burans/Rhododendron arboreum

The edible flower used to make a squash called burans in Uttarakhand and also for herbal tea for treating body inflammation. Burans tree and flowers is one of the known species of Rhododendron and state tree of Uttarakhand, Rhododendron arboreum is state flower of Himachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Parijat/Nyctanthes arbor tristis

Parijat flower or night flowering jasmine also known as Harsingar used for making garlands and the leaves are used in traditional Indian medicinal system for join pain and treat Arthritis.

Sadabahar/Catharanthus roseus

Madagascar periwinkle is the most popular ornamental and medicinal plant, known as Sadabahar in India. The ornamental plant cultivated for herbal medicine in Ayurveda against several diseases including diabetes and malaria but roots and shoots though poisonous.
